Sports are at their essence, war games. This brings to question, what is war? Merriam-Webster defines war as “a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations”. Note the clear distinction that this is an “open and declared” conflict that is “armed”. In our present world, we thankfully do not see much of war anymore, as that is a destructive and wasteful endeavor that bears too high a cost for us to want to ever have to shoulder.
At the same time, the definition also leaves room for the possibility of a conflict that is not “open and declared” and not “armed”. How does this manifest itself? Well, one avenue, I argue, is through sport.
